The Yorkshire Terrier, commonly known as the Yorkie, is a toy breed that originated in England. Originally the breed was about double the current size, and they were used for killing rats. Their coat features long, silky hair that is most often black and tan in color. The coat requires painstaking grooming including frequent brushing and combing in order to avoid knots. Their hair is hypoallergenic, making them an ideal choice for allergy sufferers.

Yorkies may be small, but they have big personalities. They tend to be very loyal and protective. They can also be excellent guard dogs, but they tend to bark loudly and excessively. They also tend to be very vocal during normal day to day activities as well. Though they are an intelligent breed, Yorkies can be difficult to train due to their strong-willed nature. In order to avoid poor behavior, early training and socialization are needed. They also require frequent exercise, but their small size makes it possible for them to burn energy through indoor activities.

Small breed dogs such as Yorkies are prone to very few health conditions. The most common is tracheal collapse. This is because they have a genetic predisposition towards weakened cartilage.
