The Shih Tzu is an energetic and loving toy breed. They can be found in a variety of colors, and they have a dense, long coat. They have been bred as a companion for thousands of years, and they have never been used for any other known purpose. Through centuries of breeding, the Shih Tzu has become a very loyal, loving, and playful lap dog that makes an ideal companion for many people.
Shih Tzus are very energetic, courageous, and often strong willed. Because of these qualities, obedience training is a must. Their luxurious coat requires frequent grooming to prevent mats and tangles. Despite the large amount of hair present, Shih Tzus are a hypoallergenic dog breed, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.
Because of their short snout, Shih Tzus are prone to a condition known as Brachycephalic Syndrome which is characterized by breathing difficulties caused by a number of deformities in the breathing passages. Dogs suffering from breathing difficulties often snort and seem to struggle for air, especially during strenuous exercise. Shih Tzus can also suffer from chronic dry eyes and distichiasis, which is a condition in which eyelashes grow inside the eyelid, which can cause severe eye irritation.
