Schnauzer - Breed Profile

The Schnauzer originated in Germany as a farm dog and vermin hunter. In modern times, they are most often a companion. Their brave, protective nature, intelligence, and loyalty makes them a popular breed for many families. Schnauzers can be found in three distinct sizes – miniature, standard, and giant. All three sizes are hypoallergenic and have wiry coats in varying shades of black, grey, or silver.

Schnauzers require frequent brushing and grooming to maintain their coat. They should be taken to a professional groomer on a regular basis. They also require early socialization and obedience training due to their high energy and vocal tendencies. Since they are very intelligent, they can be trained with relative ease and can fit into most households. Because they are very energetic, Schnauzers need frequent, regular exercise such as brisk walking. Many Schnauzers also enjoy and excel at agility training.

Schnauzers are overall a very healthy breed, but they are more prone to certain health conditions than other breeds. They often suffer from cataracts or diabetes. They are also prone to inherited autoimmune diseases such as hypothyroidism. Purchasing a dog only from a reputable breeder can help reduce the risk of buying a Schnauzer that is likely to develop health problems.
