The Rottweiler is a large breed that descended from the Mastiff. They are powerful and strong-willed. Typically they have short black coats with distinctive tan markings above the eyes and on the sides of the face, chest, legs, and beneath the tail. The coat is coarse and dense, but due to the shortness does not require much grooming.

Rottweilers are intelligent and eager to please, but have a tendency to become aggressive if they lack exercise and training. Rottweilers have been bred for centuries as working dogs, and they do not respond well to boredom. It is best to begin training as well as socialization young and provide plenty of vigorous exercise to avoid undesirable behavior. When properly trained and exercised, rottweilers are very loyal and protective. Because their instinct to protect is so strong, it is absolutely essential to provide them with rigorous training to avoid potential problems when they are kept as a family pet.

In general, the rottweiler is a very healthy breed, but there are a multitude of health problems that most large breed dogs are prone to. The most common of these is hip dysplasia. They may also be prone to cancer and heart disease.
