The Pug is a very loving and friendly small breed. It is believed that the breed was originally developed in China. They were once popular among European royalty and have been a popular choice as companions world wide since the late 1800s. Characterized by a round face with a short snout and plenty of wrinkles, the Pug has a smooth coat prone to shedding that is most often seen in colors of black and fawn.
Pugs are very energetic and have excellent temperaments, making them a good match for most families. With proper training and socialization, they make excellent companions. Because they are a very energetic breed, they do require frequent exercise. They require little grooming aside from brushing to control shedding. It is also necessary to check and clean wrinkles frequently to prevent possible infections.
Because of their flattened snouts, Pugs are prone to a condition known as Brachycephalic Syndrome. This condition causes severe difficulty breathing and is typically characterized by snorting and shortness of breath. It is especially important to be aware of the signs of breathing distress especially during physical activity. They are also prone to granulomatous meningoencephalitis, which affects the central nervous system. Pugs can also suffer from eye conditions such as corneal ulcers.
