Poodles can be found in three distinct varieties. These are the standard poodle, miniature poodle, and toy poodle. The toy poodle is the smallest variety, followed by the miniature, and then the standard. Of these, the miniature is the most common today. Poodles can be found in any solid color including but not limited to black, white, and cream. The non-shedding coat is dense and course and requires frequent grooming in order to avoid matting.

Originally bred as a hunting dog to retrieve waterfowl, today's poodle is most commonly a companion dog. The breed is loyal, good-natured, and intelligent. They often excel in obedience training and can adapt well to country or city living. Poodles of all sizes are full of energy, so frequent exercise is required. Because they are eager to please their masters, poodles especially enjoy training exercises.

Poodles have genetic predispositions to numerous health concerns. They are very prone to ear infections due to the dense fur surrounding the ear. Cleaning can be challenging, but it is essential in order to prevent infections. Poodles may also experience eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma as well as other conditions such as epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and gastrointestinal problems.
