The Pomeranian is a small and friendly breed of toy dog. Originally developed in an area of Poland and Germany once known as Pomerania, the Pomeranian as it is today has been a popular breed worldwide since one was owned by Queen Victoria of England in the late 1800s. Despite their small size, Pomeranians are outgoing, loving, and protective.
Pomeranians have thick, long coats that require frequent grooming. They must be brushed multiple times a week and often require frequent trips to a professional dog groomer. They can be found in numerous colors. The most common of these are red, black, brown, cream, and sable.
Without proper training, Pomeranians have a feisty nature that can lead them to try to assume a dominant role in the home. With proper obedience training and socialization, however, they can be excellent additions to many households. Because of their small size, they can be injured by small children and often are happiest in homes with older children. They require frequent exercise, but due to their small stature they can usually get enough physical activity indoors. Like most toy breeds, they are prone to genetic health problems such as tracheal collapse and patella luxation. They may also suffer from progressive retinal atrophy.
