Labrador Retrievers, commonly referred to as Labs, are medium to large sized dogs. They typically have a muscular, athletic build. They have been bred to be used in hunting purposes, but the qualities that make the breed excellent for retrieving also make them good companions. Labs are highly intelligent, and they have an excellent temperament. Loyalty, love, and an eagerness to please their master are hard wired into their personalities. They are also very patient, which makes them an ideal pet for people with children.

Labs require very little grooming. They have short, water-resistant coats due to their breeding as a hunting and water dog, and they only need basic grooming such as bathing and nail clipping. Labs are prone to various health problems. It is very common for larger breeds like Labs to experience elbow or hip dysplasia. They may also suffer from Osteochondrosis or Progressive Retinal Atrophy. These problems are all hereditary and relatively common among labs.

Because Labrador Retrievers are high energy dogs, they require plenty of exercise. They need daily walks as well as regular mental stimulation. They generally thrive in homes where they will be played with and receive training on a frequent and consistent basis.
