The Jack Russell Terrier originated in England in the 1800s. At that time they were used for the purpose of hunting foxes. Today they are most often kept as fun and energetic companions, but they are also used for agility and in terrier races. They are small in size and have short coats that can be either smooth or rough or in between. They typically are predominately white with brown or tan markings. Smooth coats require weekly grooming while Jack Russells with rough coats need to be professionally hand stripped.
Jack Russell Terriers are highly energetic and high spirited. They are also happy and fearless. These qualities make for a fun companion and excellent hunting dog, but they can also lead the Jack Russell Terrier into mischievous behavior. For this reason it is absolutely essential they they be trained and socialized early. Due to their high energy levels, Jack Russell Terriers require regular outdoor exercise. Boredom can lead to negative behavior such as excessive barking or chewing. Jack Russells are a relatively healthy breed, but some are prone to various eye problems such as glaucoma. Regular veterinary visits can help to ensure the long lasting health of any pet.
