The Great Dane is a large breed that originated in Germany as a hunting dog, but today they are no longer used for hunting. Rather they are typically kept as guardians or companions. Known as one of the tallest breeds in the world, the Great Dane is affectionately referred to as a gentle giant. They have short coats that can be various shades of fawn, black, or brindle. Great Danes are loving, loyal, and affectionate with a strong instinct to protect their family.
Like many giant breeds, Great Danes have a relatively short life expectancy, so it is essential to be aware of potential health problems. They are prone to problems such as hip dysplasia and bloat, which is a condition in which the stomach becomes twisted.
Because of their massive size, proper obedience training and socialization are absolutely essential. When not trained from an early age, Great Danes can easily become out of control. It is especially important to discourage common problems such as jumping and leash pulling as such behavior can be extremely dangerous when Great Danes reach adulthood. Frequent outdoor exercise is also required to prevent boredom that can lead to destructive behavior. With training and exercise, Great Danes can be loyal and protective companions.
