The Golden Retriever is a popular breed of large dog due to its personality, intelligence, and versatility. Originally bred in Scotland as a hunting dog in the 1800s, the Golden Retriever is now a very popular family pet. They are very loving and protective, and they are excellent with children. They have an eagerness to please that ensures they can be effectively trained. They also excel at obedience training. In addition to these qualities making Golden Retrievers excellent family dogs, they also make them an excellent breed for use as service dogs.
Golden Retrievers are medium to large in size and have a long, golden blond colored coat. To prevent tangles, the hair must be brushed multiple times each week, and it needs to be brushed daily during the seasons when shedding is at its peak. While they are relatively healthy, Golden Retrievers are prone to certain skeletal problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. They may also suffer from conditions that affect the eyelashes.
Because they were originally bred as sporting dogs, Golden Retrievers have an abundance of energy. For this reason they require frequent outdoor exercise and often do best when living in rural or suburban settings.
