The German Shepherd, also known as the Alsatian, is a large and versatile dog. Their coats are of medium length with a coarse outer coat and a downy undercoat. They are most often black and tan in color, but they may also be solid black or have accents of red. Their coat needs to be brushed on a daily basis, and their ears should be cleaned regularly.

German Shepherds are fearless, loyal, and protective. They are highly intelligent and have been trained for numerous purposes including protection, herding, and police work. German Shepherds were bred to be working dogs, so they have very high levels of energy. They must be properly trained in obedience and socialized at a young age, and they need frequent exercise. When they do not have healthy outlets for their energy, they tend to act out in negative, destructive ways. Unwanted behaviors can include excessive barking, chewing, or aggressive behavior.

Though they are a relatively strong and healthy breed, German Shepherds are prone to various health problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, pansotitis, and spinal problems. They also frequently experience skin problems such as itching and allergies to fleas as well as ear infections.
