The English Bulldog was originally an aggressive breed that was used in inhumane sports such as dog fighting and bull baiting. When such sports were outlawed, the Bulldog faced extinction because people did not see the breed as a companion animal. However, a few dog enthusiasts saved the breed by selecting for a friendlier, less aggressive temperament.
Bulldogs can be found in numerous colors including white, brindle, red, and fawn, and they are short in stature. Their most distinctive feature, however, is their short, wrinkled snout. Their coat is short but sheds a large amount. They require little grooming, but should be bathed regularly to avoid potential skin conditions that can develop because of the breed's folds and wrinkles.
Dogs with short snouts, such as English Bulldogs, are highly prone to numerous breathing difficulties. These dogs often suffer from Brachycephalic Syndrome. This condition is characterized by numerous problems that can lead to extreme difficultly breathing and a drastically shortened life expectancy. It is important to be aware of any breathing difficulties, especially during physical activities. While Bulldogs are great family dogs, they require owners who are able and willing to deal with the health conditions that invariably occur.
