The Doberman Pinscher is an active and loyal breed. Originally bred as German police dogs, Dobermans are known for their fiercely protective nature and have been used since the nineteenth century as security dogs. They range from medium to large in size and have slender, muscular bodies. They are most often black and rust colored, but they may also be fawn, blue, or red. Their ears are typically cropped into a distinctive, pointed shape, but sometimes they are left natural. Their short coat sheds very little and requires only minimal grooming.
Dobermans are highly intelligent and can be easily trained. They usually do especially well in obedience training. They are well-mannered with their owners, and they are often very protective and loving towards children, making them a good family dog.
In order to maintain their health and strong, slender appearance, Doberman Pinschers require frequent and regular exercise. Since they were originally bred as a working dog, they need healthy outlets for their energy. Like many other large breed dogs, Dobermans are prone to hip dysplasia. Keeping the dog at a healthy weight throughout its life and providing plenty of regular exercise can help reduce the risk of developing this problem.
