Dachshunds can be found in two varieties – the standard and the miniature. They can be found in a multitude of colors, and their coat may be smooth, long, or wiry. Smooth and wiry haired dachshunds require only minimal grooming while longer haired varieties need more frequent grooming to avoid mats. Their short legs and long body gives them a very distinct appearance regardless of their color or coat. Originally bred in Europe as a hunting dog, the dachshunds of today are mostly kept as faithful companions

Dachshunds are very alert and protective. They can make excellent watchdogs, but they have a tendency to bark excessively. They are friendly and intelligent. While they can be successfully trained, their strong-willed nature can make the process difficult. They are full of energy and require frequent exercise.

Because of their long body and a genetic disposition towards brittle discs, dachshunds are prone to back problems. In order to prevent back injury it is essential for dachshunds to maintain a healthy weight. They also should not be allowed to jump from furniture, vehicles, or other high surfaces. If a dachshund exhibits any sign of back injury, it is imperative to see a veterinarian immediately.
