The Cocker Spaniel was originally bred as a hunting dog and retriever, but thanks to its delightful personality it has become more of a companion breed in modern times. They have long, silky coats and can be seen in various colors including red, black, blond, and cream. They may also have accents of white. They require frequent brushing and professional grooming to prevent mats and tangles. Their pleasant demeanor makes the Cocker Spaniel an ideal breed for many families.
Cocker Spaniels are very intelligent and energetic. Their eagerness to please makes them easy to train. Without proper training and exercise Cocker Spaniels can easily become bored, which can lead to negative behavior such as barking and chewing. It is absolutely essential to provide them with frequent outdoor exercise such as walks to prevent this behavior.
A relatively healthy breed, the Cocker Spaniel suffers from very few genetic health conditions. They are most prone to skin and ear infections. Some Cocker Spaniels also suffer from a genetic predisposition to eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy. Even though the breed is generally healthy, routine veterinary exams are essential to ensure the health of any dog.
