The Chihuahua is one of the smallest breeds of dog in the world, but their tiny bodies are home to huge personalities. They can be found with either long or short coats, and they can be a large variety of different colors. The most commonly seen colors are black, fawn, white, or a combination of two colors. Smooth coated Chihuahuas require little grooming, while those with longer coats must be brushed frequently to avoid matting. The Chihuahua's most striking and unique feature is its ears that often appear too large for its head. Chihuahuas are often very bold considering their small stature, and they are usually very energetic, playful and affectionate.
Though an intelligent breed, Chihuahuas can be very stubborn and dominant when not properly trained. When socialized and taught basic obedience from an early age, they can be excellent companions for many families. Due to their small size, however, they can easily be injured by small children. The Chihuahua is a healthy breed with only a few common genetic problems. They are most prone to patella luxation, which is a problem that affects the knee cap. Like many other small breed dogs, they are also prone to tracheal collapse.
