The Boxer is a medium sized breed that was originally developed in Germany as a combination of a Mastiff and a Bulldog. They were taken to the USA following World War 1. They were originally developed as a guard dog, and today they have become a very popular family dog due to their loyalty, good temperament, and protective nature. Boxers are excellent with children and their protective instinct makes them good home guardians.
Boxers are typically brindle or fawn colored, and they often have white markings. They have smooth coats and require only minimal grooming. Regular brushing can help reduce shedding. Boxers are a very intelligent breed, but they can be overly hyper and unruly when they lack proper training. Obedience training and frequent outdoor exercise are required to prevent negative behavior caused by boredom and excess energy.
Boxers are predisposed to a number of generic disorders. The most prominent of these are conditions effecting the eyes and heart. They may also develop skin conditions or skeletal disorders such as hip dysplasia that are typical in large breeds. When a Boxer begins to exhibit signs of any health condition, it is important to see a veterinarian and begin treatment as soon as possible.
