The Boston Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in America in the late 1800s. They were originally bred for fighting purposes, but today they are a popular companion breed. Typically they are loving and even tempered with humans as well as other pets. They have smooth, short coats and are most frequently seen in black and white. They can also be brown or sable with white markings. They require very little grooming and cause little problems to people with allergies.
Because of their high level of energy, frequent exercise is required for Boston Terriers. It is important, however, to not overdo the exercise. Boston Terriers are a brachycephalic breed, which means they are prone to breathing difficulties due to their short snout which can cause restricted airways. In addition to breathing problems, Boston Terriers, like many small breeds, are also prone to patella luxation, corneal ulcers, and collapsing trachea.
Boston Terriers are intelligent and possess a strong desire to please their owner. For these reasons, they excel at obedience training. When properly trained, they can make excellent, friendly companions that fit into many households. Because of their loyalty and loud bark, they can also make excellent watch dogs.
