For centuries the beagle has been a popular small hunting dog. Used most often for trailing rabbits, the beagle originated in England. They have short, coarse coats, and they can have any of the colors or markings that are typical of hounds. They shed an average amount and require only minimal grooming. Because they are good-natured they can make excellent family pets.

Beagles are very intelligent but strong-willed. Because they are born with a very strong tracking instinct, training should be started early to avoid problems. Obedience training especially is absolutely necessary to prevent beagles from becoming defiant. They are very loving and loyal and can easily fit into most households when they have been well trained and socialized from an early age. Though they have a tendency to act lazy, beagles are very energetic and require frequent outdoor exercise.

One of the most common health problems beagles face is obesity due to lack of exercise. It is important to provide beagles with a healthy diet and plentiful exercise to ensure that they are a healthy weight. They are also prone to other conditions such as epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism.
