Nation of Animal Bashers? According to recent statistics released by the RSPCA, animal cruelty is on the rise in the United Kingdom. Cruelty towards dogs has increased by over a third, cruelty to cats is up by about 15% and horse abuse is up by 13%. Some of the increase can be attributed to the new Animal Welfare Act, which puts in place more stringent regulations regarding an owner's responsibilities towards their pets. The RSPCA has recently had to re-invigorate their drive to find new funding sources. An advertising campaign has started to be shown regularly on television, directly targeted towards individual people, expressing what the RSPCA sees as a universal moral responsibility of care for the nation's animals. It highlights how the new laws, coupled with rising cases of animal abuse and/or neglect, are really draining the limited resources of this charity. They really do depend on the generosity of the British public in order to continue their good work. Of course, the UK is a nation of animal lovers, with over 13 million pet dogs and cats. However, pets are increasingly falling victim to today's throw-away culture. This must be stopped. Please give generously.
